Do I need a Gun to Mow My Lawn?

by Prudence on August 10, 2011

What a question.  Who and why would you need a gun to mow your lawn?   After all, you won’t find a gun in the lawn and garden section at your local home improvement store.

Well consider this, the other day on the news I heard this: A 50 year old women was in her fenced in back yard doing lawn and garden work when she was approached by a white male in his late forties.  The man chased her into her house, attempted to sexually assault her.  She managed to fight him off by stabbing him with a pair of scissors.  The man finally ran out from her house and the police are currently drawing up a composite sketch and searching for this individual.

Did you catch that I said fenced in back yard?  You should be safe in your home and your yard, especially when it is fenced in.  Now I don’t know if her gate was open or if the man jumped the 6ft fence.  Either way, she was just out enjoying the day doing some work in her own yard.

Times are still relatively prosperous and I suspect this was just a crime of opportunity.  But what if times get tough, what if you are out in your yard tending your garden or as you mow your lawn someone decides they want some apples from your apple tree, are you prepared to defend yourself and your food, especially if food is in short supply?

It is not something I like to think about, but, after hearing about what happened to this fifty year old woman, I am thinking now and investigating self-defense weapons.

The second amendment protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms.   This is for protection.  One place you should have the right to protect yourself is on your own property, especially in your home or fenced in yard.

For me, I have started looking at guns for self-defense.  Especially since we are headed for rough economic times ahead.  When times get tough crime goes up.  Having some level of protection and the skill to use it will put you ahead of most.

Personally, I like a .22lr caliber gun.  It has low recoil, usually easy to carry, especially in your home or yard and fairly accurate.  Chances are in the case of the women above, once shot would have scared of this man without her having to retreat into her home.  But if someone is desperate, maybe looking for food you may need a bigger caliber like a .380, 9mm or my favorite a 12-gauge shotgun.  If you are new to guns, many times the  best gun for a women would be a revolver, they are simple to use and fire each and every time…as long as it is loaded that is.

Sure there are many other calibers but for the most part these mentioned are the most popular and it is fairly easy to get ammunition.

Before you buy a gun however I highly recommend you go to training on how to use one.  Your local shooting range or gun dealer can point you in the right direction for the proper training.  Many times classes are free or very inexpensive.

As sad as it sounds you need to stay vigilant, even in your own back yard.  I pray I never have to use any type of deadly force, but one thing is for sure, I will have a self-defense weapon on me the next time I am out in my fenced in back yard.
